Kamukunji Senior School in Pumwani has marked a major milestone after MP Yusuf Hassan launched a free education programme that will support all students at the institution from this term.
A total of 542 students are now benefiting from the new NG-CDF bursary scheme worth Sh8.1 million, easing the burden on parents and ensuring learners remain in school without being locked out because of fees.
The programme was launched during a major school infrastructure handover ceremony, where MP Yusuf Hassan also officially opened 12 new classrooms, 33 modern toilets, a new basketball court, freshly paved school grounds and handed over 450 desks.

The new support programme means every student at Kamukunji Senior School will enjoy free day secondary education, making the school a model for public education access in Nairobi.MP Yusuf Hassan said the initiative was part of his commitment to ensuring that no child in Kamukunji is denied education because of poverty.

Kamukunji Senior School has a proud history in Nairobi and is remembered for producing some of Kenya’s well-known football talents, including Victor Wanyama, McDonald Mariga and Dennis Oliech.According to MP Yusuf Hassan, the investment in new classrooms, sanitation, sports facilities and bursaries is meant to restore the school’s dignity and give current students the same chance to dream, compete and succeed.
He noted that when he first took office, the school was in poor condition, with muddy grounds and inadequate facilities. The latest improvements now give the institution a stronger foundation for academic performance, discipline and talent development.

Parents were also urged to ensure their children remain in school now that fees have been covered through the free education programme.
