Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan has inspected the newly upgraded Pumwani Level 4 Hospital in Majengo, Pumwani Ward, marking the completion of a major health infrastructure project expected to improve access to advanced medical care for residents of one of Nairobi’s most densely populated urban areas.

The facility, formerly a basic health centre, has now been transformed into a fully operational hospital offering expanded medical services, including emergency care, maternity services, inpatient care, specialist outpatient clinics, and surgical support.

Speaking during the visit, MP Yusuf Hassan said the upgrade represents a major step forward for public healthcare in Kamukunji and a direct response to long-standing gaps in local health service delivery.

From Health Centre to Level 4 Hospital

The transformation of the former Pumwani Health Centre into a modern hospital was driven through sustained advocacy and national-level intervention led by MP Yusuf Hassan.

At the beginning of the project, Nairobi County Government was facing serious administrative challenges, creating a governance vacuum in urban health infrastructure development. MP Yusuf Hassan engaged former President Uhuru Kenyatta and the leadership of the Nairobi Metropolitan Services to prioritise the upgrade of the facility.

Those efforts helped move the facility from a basic health centre to a higher-capacity hospital, with further improvements eventually elevating it to Level 4 status.

Key Services Now Available

  • Emergency care: Improved capacity to respond to urgent medical cases within Pumwani and neighbouring areas.
  • Maternity services: Expanded support for mothers, including a maternity wing serving families in Majengo, Eastleigh, and surrounding communities.
  • Outpatient services: A dedicated outpatient unit to ease pressure on larger referral hospitals.
  • Inpatient care: Bed capacity to support patients requiring admission and close medical monitoring.
  • Specialist care: Improved access to specialised clinics and more advanced medical procedures.

National Advocacy and Local Impact

The hospital’s upgrade was supported through national allocations and implemented with the involvement of Amref Health Africa. For residents, the completed facility is expected to reduce the burden of travelling long distances for services that can now be accessed closer to home.

For many families in Pumwani Ward, the facility is more than a building project. It represents access, dignity, and timely medical attention. Aisha Juma, a mother of four, described the transformation as “a miracle,” saying the hospital will make healthcare easier to reach for ordinary families.

MP Yusuf Hassan said the project reflects what can be achieved when constituency leadership, national government support, and implementation partners work together to address urgent community needs.

Pumwani Maternity Hospital Also Shows Major Improvement

During the visit, MP Yusuf Hassan also toured Pumwani Maternity Hospital, a historic maternal health facility that has previously faced public concern over management, funding, congestion, and ageing infrastructure.

The MP was taken through the expansive facility by a team led by Chief Executive Officer Christine Kiteshuo and Board Chairperson Dr Mercy Mwangangi.

The tour highlighted visible improvements in cleanliness, water access, patient care, and general service delivery. The hospital has also improved basic patient amenities, including water points with hot water, while staff appeared well organised and focused on patient care.

Although the hospital continues to face pressure around incubator capacity, bed space, and theatre expansion, the management team has made progress in organising available resources to deliver better care to mothers and newborns.

Education Projects Also Inspected

In a related development, MP Yusuf Hassan also visited New Kamukunji Primary School, Heshima Primary School in Pumwani Ward, and Zawadi Primary School in Eastleigh South Ward to assess progress on infrastructure upgrades funded through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund.

The school projects form part of a broader effort to create safer, more modern, and more inspiring learning environments for children across Kamukunji.

MP Yusuf Hassan reiterated his commitment to improving both health and education outcomes in the constituency, saying public investment must directly improve the daily lives of families.

Related Constituency Priorities

  • Healthcare access: Expanding local medical services so residents can receive treatment closer to home.
  • Maternal care: Supporting better facilities and services for mothers and newborns.
  • School infrastructure: Upgrading classrooms and learning environments through NGCDF support.
  • Urban renewal: Linking health, education, markets, roads, and safety projects to wider constituency development.
The completed hospital upgrade adds to other major public projects associated with Yusuf Hassan’s development agenda in Kamukunji, including market infrastructure, school improvements, and support for essential community services.

For residents of Pumwani, Majengo, Eastleigh, and surrounding areas, the upgraded facility is expected to become a critical pillar of healthcare access, especially for women, children, and low-income households seeking affordable public medical services.
