Residents of Meru Road in Pumwani are finally seeing relief after years of blocked drainage, sewage overflow and poor road conditions that had made life difficult for families, traders and school-going children.
For a long time, residents say the area was neglected despite repeated appeals to Nairobi City County and other local authorities. Blocked drains often released wastewater onto the road, creating foul smells, unsafe walking conditions and serious health concerns.

The situation became worse during rainy seasons, when stagnant sewage and storm water would flood the street and make movement almost impossible.
“When it rains, the entire neighbourhood turns into a mini river. Children are unable to get to their schools and people are stranded inside their homes,” said Mama Kibwana Hamisi, a long-time resident of Meru Road.
MP Yusuf Hassan Steps In
Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan personally intervened by spearheading the restoration of Meru Road and its drainage system ahead of the rainy season. The work is aimed at improving sanitation, easing movement, reducing flooding and restoring dignity to a street that residents say had been ignored for too long.
Residents welcomed the intervention, saying the project has brought hope to families who had lived for years with sewage flowing near their homes and businesses.
Restoring Dignity to Pumwani
The Meru Road drainage restoration is part of broader efforts by MP Yusuf Hassan to improve roads, drainage, health, education and public infrastructure across Kamukunji Constituency. For residents of Pumwani, the project is not just about road works. It is about safety, health and the right to live in a cleaner neighbourhood.
“We have approached every relevant authority, but our concerns continued to be ignored,” Mama Kibwana said.
With restoration now underway, residents say the intervention has given Meru Road a new sense of hope and shown the importance of responsive leadership in addressing everyday problems affecting communities.
