OpenAI is set to launch its highly anticipated AI model, GPT-5, in August, marking what the company calls a “major leap” in performance, speed, and reasoning ability.

In an interview with TechRadar, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had said that the new model will be faster, smarter, and more intuitive than any existing model in the world.

During the podcast, Altman said that he mostly uses the GPT for research, and he also described a moment when GPT-5 solved a complex question that he himself could not answer, calling it a surprising experience and referring to it as a “here it is” moment.

Sources suggest that the new model may be launched in early August. It will be a major milestone for how we think about human–AI collaboration.
GPT-5 is expected to deliver seamless multimodal capabilities, handling text, images, and possibly audio or video within one unified system.

It will also feature expanded memory, improved contextual understanding, and new reasoning abilities, setting it apart from current models like GPT-4 and GPT-4o.

Altman emphasised that GPT-5 is not just an upgrade but “a foundational step toward building systems that can assist in complex decision-making, creative work, and research.”

The new model will be part of OpenAI’s strategy to combine its GPT and o-series technologies into one system, making it easier for users and developers to work with. The model will likely debut first on ChatGPT and through API access for developers.

The upcoming GPT-5 model is also expected to carry over reasoning features from OpenAI’s O3 model, which had been tested separately before.

This move will help OpenAI present GPT-5 as a more complete and capable system, paving the way toward its larger goal of building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), a system that can perform tasks at a human level or beyond.

While GPT-5’s launch is gaining attention, OpenAI is also planning to release an open-weight AI model even before the August rollout.

This model is expected to launch by the end of July, and according to insiders, the open model will be similar to the O3 mini, featuring good reasoning capabilities and giving the AI community access to powerful tools without restrictions.

This will be a big step as OpenAI has not released a fully open-weight model since GPT-2, which came out in 2019.

With rivals like Google and Anthropic also advancing their AI platforms, OpenAI’s GPT-5 could redefine the standard for general-purpose artificial intelligence.

OpenAI’s open model is set to launch across major platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Hugging Face, and additional cloud services.

The broader deployment signals a strategic move to challenge competitors like Meta and Mistral, both of which have been aggressively expanding their presence in the open AI model space throughout the year.
