Sudan’s PM restructures government, breaks ground with female Cabinet Affairs minister
Sudan’s Prime Minister Kamil Idris has appointed eight new officials to his Cabinet, including the country’s first female Minister of Cabinet Affairs, as part of efforts to finalise a 22-member government made up of independent professionals.
The appointments, announced on Sunday, are part of what the administration has called a “government of hope,” intended to restore public trust and steer Sudan through its ongoing political transition.
Among those named is Lemia Abdel Ghaffar Khalafallah, who makes history as the first woman to serve as Minister of Cabinet Affairs.
Lemia previously held the position of Secretary-General of the National Population Council but was dismissed in 2019 by then-Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok during a purge of officials linked to the regime of former President Omar al-Bashir, according to The Sudan Tribune.
Other appointees include Al-Mutasim Ibrahim, the head of the University of Shendi’s council, who has been named Minister of Energy, and Ahmed al-Dirdiri Ghandour, Sudan’s former Foreign Minister, who will now serve as Minister of Digital Transformation and Communications.
Al-Tohami Al-Zain Hajar returns as Minister of Education and National Pedagogy, while Ahmed Adam Ahmed, a specialist in physical education and sports, takes over as Minister of Youth and Sports.
In addition to the five ministers, three ministers of state have also been appointed.
Sulaima Ishaq, a prominent advocate for the protection of women and children, will serve as Minister of State in the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Welfare.
Mohamed Nour Abdel Dayem, who was deputy auditor general during the al-Bashir era, has been appointed Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance.
Omer Siddig, Sudan’s current Ambassador to China, will serve as Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He brings significant diplomatic experience, having previously served in Sudan’s missions to the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and South Africa.
