KCB edge Strathmore Leos to clinch 2025 Driftwood 7s title
KCB Rugby beat Strathmore Leos 15-14 in a tense final at the Mombasa Sports Club on Sunday to win the Driftwood 7s and open their 2025 National 7s Circuit campaign with a bang.
KCB capitalised on early mistakes from Strathmore, with Elvis Olukusi grounding the opening try after a handling error led to a scrum in the Leos' half. The subsequent conversion, by Festus Shiasi, was unsuccessful but KCB led 5-0.
Another mistake from Strathmore gifted KCB possession and Floyd Wabwire punished the Leos with a second try. Shiasi missed the conversion, but KCB extended their lead to 10-0.
Before the break, Olukusi grounded his second try of the match, sending the Bankers into halftime with a 15-0 lead.
However, Strathmore mounted a spirited second-half comeback, with Barnabas Owuor crossing the line after the restart. The try was successfully converted, narrowing KCB's lead to eight points.
KCB were temporarily reduced to six men after Wabwire was yellow-carded for a high tackle on Samuel Wafula, but Strathmore failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage.
As time ran out, the Leos came close to snatching the win after a penalty try brought the score to 15-14. However, the final whistle came seconds later, sealing a narrow win for KCB.
In the third-place playoff, Kabras RFC overcame Nakuru RFC 21-10 after recovering from a slow start. Nakuru opened the scoring after capitalising on a defensive error by Lameck Ambetsa, but missed the conversion.
However, Roy Maruti levelled the scores for Kabras and converted his own try. Brian Mutua added another before Maruti's second conversion gave Kabras a 14-5 halftime lead.
In the second half, Maruti struck again to extend Kabras' lead before Nakuru pulled one back. However, Kabras held on for third place.
Similarly, Menengai Oilers clinched the Challenge Trophy after edging Kenya Harlequin 14-10, while Zetech Oaks beat NYS Spades 10-0 in the Division 2 final, earning promotion to Division 1 ahead of next weekend's Prinsloo 7s to be held in Nakuru.
