Met department forecasts chilly weather, scattered rains
Kenyans should prepare for a cold and windy week ahead as the Kenya Meteorological Department forecasts a mix of low temperatures, scattered rainfall, and strong winds across various regions between August 5 and August 11, 2025.
In its latest seven-day forecast, the department warns of chilly mornings and nights, especially in parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, South-eastern Lowlands and sections of the Rift Valley.
The weatherman said rainfall is expected to increase slightly in the Central Highlands, the Coast, Western, and North-western Kenya, although the showers will remain scattered.
These rains may offer some temporary relief to farmers and pastoral communities that have been grappling with dry spells in recent weeks.
“The showers will remain scattered but may provide temporary relief for farmers and rangelands,” the forecast states.
Cold and cloudy conditions are expected to persist in many areas, with temperatures dropping further during morning and night hours. According to the weatherman, “Mornings and nights may feel especially chilly.”
In some places, night temperatures are likely to fall below 10°C, particularly in the Central Highlands, South-eastern Lowlands, and parts of the Rift Valley.
The Met Department has advised residents in these regions to dress warmly, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with respiratory conditions.
Despite the cold mornings, some areas, particularly in North-eastern and North-western Kenya will continue to experience high daytime temperatures, with forecasts showing readings above 30 degrees Celsius.
The forecast also warns of strong winds that may affect the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, South-eastern Lowlands, North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
These winds are expected to blow from the south to south-east at speeds exceeding 25 knots (12.86 metres per second).
“Strong southerly to south-easterly winds greater than 25 knots (12.86 metres per second) are expected across the Coast, Kenya’s territorial waters, SE Lowlands, NE, and NW,” the weatherman said.
The Meteorological Department said it will continue monitoring the evolving weather conditions and will issue updates as necessary. It urged Kenyans to stay informed, make necessary adjustments, and take advantage of the improved rainfall in some areas.
