KeNHA schedules four-month closure on part of Thika–Garissa road for bridge rehabilitation
Motorists using the busy Thika–Garissa Road should brace for prolonged traffic disruptions as the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) begins repair works on the Kavenge (Mbakini) bridge near Mbakini centre.
In a public notice issued Monday, KeNHA announced that the affected section of the road will be partially closed from Saturday, July 26, to Saturday, November 8, 2025, to allow for maintenance and rehabilitation of the bridge's girders and deck.
Girders are the large horizontal beams that support a bridge’s weight, while the deck is the surface vehicles drive on. Damage to either can compromise the entire structure.
KeNHA says the repairs are essential to ensure the bridge’s structural safety and enhance transport efficiency along this vital corridor connecting Thika to Garissa and the greater northeastern region.
"The Kenya National Highways Authority (KenHA) wishes to notify the public that a section of Thika-Garissa (A3) Road at Kavenge (Mbakini) bridge near Mbakini centre, will experience traffic disruption from Saturday, July 26 to November 8, 2025," the notice, issued on X, reads.
"This is to allow for maintenance and rehabilitation works on the bridge girders and the deck."
KeNHA also released an image highlighting the affected stretch of road and the proposed traffic diversions. It noted that approach roads leading to the closed section of the bridge will be inaccessible, with vehicles redirected through controlled alternative routes.
Motorists should expect multiple diversions once the renovation begins. The roads agency has urged all road users to strictly follow the new traffic arrangements to prevent confusion and ensure safety throughout the construction period.
KeNHA further emphasised that drivers must adhere to the marked diversions and follow instructions from police and traffic marshals stationed at key points along the route.
"Kenha advises motorists to follow the proposed traffic management plan and cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site," the roads agency said.
