A clean, odour-free fridge is not just a matter of aesthetics; it is essential for food safety and creating a pleasant kitchen environment.

Yet, despite its importance, many households struggle with persistent fridge odours and clutter that can compromise freshness and hygiene.

Experts say that regular and thorough cleaning of your refrigerator is the key to banishing unpleasant smells and maintaining a safe space for your food.

The refrigerator is home to various foods, some with strong aromas or natural moisture that can promote mould and bacteria growth.

Left unattended, spilt juices, forgotten leftovers, or expired products can create a breeding ground for bad odours, so cleaning also helps prevent cross-contamination, which is vital for food safety.

“Your fridge should be cleaned at least once every three months, but if you notice smells or spills sooner, don’t wait,” Morris Odhiambo, a cleaning expert in Nairobi, told The Eastleigh Voice.

“A clean fridge is a fresh fridge. Food safety is paramount in a household.”

Step 1: Prepare and unplug

Before starting, clear out your fridge completely.

Use this opportunity to throw away expired items or anything you no longer need.

To avoid wasting food, always check the expiration dates carefully once in a while.

For safety and better cleaning, unplug your fridge or turn off the power, because this also helps save energy while the door remains open during cleaning.

Step 2: Remove and clean shelves and drawers

Take out all removable parts such as shelves, drawers, and door racks.

Then wash these separately using warm water mixed with mild dish soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals that can leave residue or damage surfaces.

If your fridge has stubborn stains or sticky spills, let the parts soak for 15-20 minutes before you go scrubbing gently with a sponge or soft brush.

Rinse well and dry thoroughly before putting them back to prevent moisture build-up.

Step 3: Clean the interior

Wipe the inside of the fridge with a solution made of equal parts water and white vinegar, or a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water.

Vinegar is an excellent natural deodoriser and disinfectant that helps eliminate bacteria causing bad smells. Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean all surfaces, including walls, ceiling, and door seals.

“Pay extra attention to the corners and crevices where spills tend to accumulate. Some fridges have a removable door gasket, you can remove gently and clean with warm water before returning it,” Odhiambo says.

“For tough odours, sprinkle baking soda on a damp sponge and scrub gently. This is because baking soda neutralises smells naturally and is safe for all surfaces.

Step 4: Clean door seals

Door gaskets can trap crumbs and moisture, becoming hotspots for mould and mildew.

Use a toothbrush dipped in the vinegar solution to scrub the rubber seals carefully. After cleaning, wipe with a dry cloth to remove any moisture.

Step 5: Deodorise and maintain freshness

After cleaning, place an open box of baking soda inside the fridge to absorb any more odours.

Replace the box every three months for continuous freshness, as you would like.

“You can also use natural odour absorbers like activated charcoal, coffee grounds, or lemon slices placed in a small bowl to keep the fridge smelling pleasant.”

Step 6: Organise and return items

Before placing your produce back, wipe jars and bottles to avoid introducing new spills.

Organise your fridge with frequently used items in front for easy access and leftovers clearly labelled with dates.

Remember, in case of any spill, do not let liquids sit there for days, and keep your fridge at or below 4°C (40°F) to slow bacterial growth.
A clean fridge not only prevents unpleasant odours but also helps keep your food safer and extends its shelf life.
