“63,000 Learners Benefited” — Yusuf Hassan Updates Kamukunji Women on Bursaries, Schools and Jobs

At Eastleigh High School, Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan briefed women on constituency projects, bursaries supporting 63,000 learners, youth skills training for 1,600+ youth, and new schools and health facilities underway.

Kamukunji Member of Parliament Yusuf Hassan on Sunday met with women from across
Kamukunji Constituency at Eastleigh High School, where he presented an update on
development projects implemented since his election and listened to community-level concerns affecting livelihoods.

The forum focused on education, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and social welfare, with the MP outlining completed and ongoing projects and explaining that the engagement was meant to strengthen accountability in the use of public resources.

He said the meeting also created space for women to share their development priorities and the day-to-day challenges facing families and neighbourhoods across Kamukunji.
Today, I had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of women from every corner of Kamukunji—sharing updates on key development projects completed and underway, reaffirming our commitment to expand empowerment initiatives, and thanking them for their unwavering support and solidarity.

Among the key projects highlighted was the Gikomba Market development, with one section already
operational and another nearing completion.

Yusuf Hassan also referenced the Kamukunji Technical and Vocational College (TVET), Zawadi Secondary School, Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School, and the sub-county administration offices.

He further cited road projects implemented in various parts of the constituency, alongside education support programmes that have benefited learners from low-income households.

Education and Bursaries

Education featured prominently in the discussions. The MP stated that bursaries have supported thousands of students since he assumed office, and he announced that bursary registration for the next cycle will begin on Monday.

“Since you elected me, 63,000 learners have benefited from the bursary programme in Kamukunji.”

He also informed the women that additional projects are underway to expand access to education and health services. These include the construction of New Kamukunji Primary and Secondary School, a Level Three hospital in Pumwani, and the Kiambiu Community Centre, which he said is nearing completion.

The MP added that new classrooms are being built in several schools, including 27 classrooms at
New Kamukunji Primary and Junior Secondary School and a new New Kamukunji Primary School in Majengo.

He added that the initiative aims to reduce idleness among youth and lower involvement in crime.

1,700 children are no longer idling in our neighbourhoods; they will complete their training in six months and will be supported to employ themselves.”

Community Concerns Raised

During the session, women raised concerns affecting their livelihoods, including demolitions of houses near the river and limited opportunities for artists such as comedians.

The MP assured residents that their issues would be addressed through engagement with relevant institutions so that development initiatives do not disadvantage communities. He emphasised that his office remains accessible and committed to serving women and all residents of Kamukunji.

Community Testimonies

Several mothers shared testimonies on the impact of bursaries and development projects. Florence Atieno
from Eastleigh South Ward said her son benefited from bursary support from secondary school through university, describing the system as fair and inclusive.
“My child was educated all the way to university through bursaries because they are given without discrimination.”

The meeting concluded with a call for continued collaboration between residents and the MP as development projects continue across Kamukunji Constituency.
