Livestock farmers in Taita Taveta County are set to benefit from a comprehensive animal health and vaccination campaign launched under the National Agricultural Value Chain Development Project (NAVCDP), with a special focus on the dairy sector.

The countywide exercise, which incorporates a digital e-voucher system, aims to reduce livestock disease cases and increase productivity.

The innovative platform connects farmer cooperatives with veterinary experts, vaccine suppliers, and key partners, including Safaricom and Mifugo 360, streamlining service delivery and boosting efficiency at the grassroots level.

County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Livestock, Irrigation, and Cooperative Development, Katuu Mzenge, said the county is committed to fast-tracking the project’s goals to sustain its national recognition in agricultural excellence. “We must build on the momentum and ensure every livestock farmer feels the impact of this programme. We have already made significant progress at the ward level, and this is the time to scale up,” he said.

Chief Livestock Officer Habibu Mruttu said the vaccination programme comes as a major relief to the department, which has faced frequent funding constraints. “It is a timely boost that will help us curb animal diseases and reinforce our veterinary services,” he noted.

Echoing similar sentiments, Chief Agriculture Officer Mcharo Mwalugha urged all wards to operationalise their cooperative societies, describing them as crucial in implementing the BETA (Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda) framework and delivering essential services.

NAVCDP County Coordinator Andrew Mbinga underlined the broader ambition of the initiative to transition communities from socio-political dependence to economic resilience.

He noted that the campaign also involves the use of advanced livestock tracking technologies, proper vaccine cold-chain systems, public awareness drives, and strict adherence to environmental and social monitoring measures.

The programme will be coordinated through ward-based committees bringing together government officers, cooperative representatives, and other stakeholders, positioning the dairy sector as a key pillar of rural transformation in the county.
