Four bodies found in Mombasa, sparking probe into their 'sudden deaths'

At least four people have been found dead in unclear circumstances within Migadini’s Matangini village, Mombasa County, prompting health officials to launch investigations into suspected cases of sudden deaths involving chronically ill individuals.
According to the Mombasa County Department of Health, unverified reports of the deaths were received between July 9 and July 14, 2025, triggering the immediate deployment of an investigative team to the area to assess the situation and address public concerns.
In a statement on Tuesday, the County’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre confirmed that four adult males had died within that period, with initial findings linking the deaths to chronic health conditions.
“Upon receiving this information, the department immediately deployed an investigative team to Migadini area to investigate the reported cases and the public concerns,” the County said.
Details of the deaths show that a 91-year-old woman died at her home on July 9. Community members told investigators that besides her advanced age, she had an unspecified chronic illness.
On July 14, a 57-year-old man was found dead in his house. According to the county health department, he had been undergoing medical follow-up at Port-Reitz Sub-County Hospital for various chronic conditions.
Two other deaths were also reported on the same day. A 69-year-old man, said to have been asthmatic, was found dead in his home. The department said his body was already in the early stages of decomposition when discovered.
Separately, a 55-year-old man was also found dead in his home under similar conditions. The man had a history of chronic illnesses and had recently been treated for dengue fever.
The department said all four bodies have been preserved at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting post-mortem examinations and further evaluation.
Although health officials have ruled out infectious disease at this stage, residents have been advised to take precautions as investigations continue.
“Although the health department has not found any evidence of an infectious disease at this stage, we urge the public to liaise with community health promoters, community leaders, and community-based organisations to report any cases of missing persons,” the County said.
Residents have also been warned against handling human remains and directed to report such incidents immediately to community leaders, the police or the health department.
In addition, the county has called for strict hygiene practices, including frequent handwashing with soap and water or use of alcohol-based sanitisers and advised those feeling unwell to seek immediate medical care.
“The County department continues to monitor the situation and will provide more updates as more information becomes available,” the County said.
