Small-scale merchants and mobile hawkers have acknowledged that the CHAN 2024 tournament is a significant economic opportunity, bringing large crowds and potential customers closer to them.

However, many are now decrying what they see as discrimination and exclusion, particularly around the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Stadium.

Some who spoke to The Eastleigh Voice said authorities have restricted their access to the stadium’s vicinity, cutting them off from fans, their primary customer base, during match days.

This move, they say, has left them frustrated, especially after investing in stock with hopes of reaping the benefits of the influx of football supporters.

Their concerns came to a head on Thursday, ahead of Kenya’s second group match against Angola, when confrontations broke out as hawkers tried to access the area near the stadium.

The traders are now pleading with relevant stakeholders to create a structured and fair system that includes them in the tournament environment without the chaos witnessed.

Notably, they stress the need for inclusive planning that allows them to earn a living while maintaining order and security around the venues.
