Nigeria issues fresh flood alert to 28 states, capital city

Nigeria issued a fresh flood alert on Tuesday for 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory due to a high risk of massive flooding between Tuesday and August 5.
Umar Mohammed, head of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency, said at a press briefing here that the flood alert, which may affect over 739 communities and 162 local government areas, was consistent with the agency's latest forecast and its 2025 annual flood outlook released in April.
Umar emphasised that the intensity and impact of the floods will vary across the 28 states, and include key metropolitan areas such as the capital city region and Lagos, the country's economic hub.
He also warned that the floods could disrupt over 100 major transportation routes, including vital economic corridors, highlighting the increased risk of property damage in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Agricultural lands are also under threat, which could potentially impact food security across several regions, he added.
